About the event

Take advantage of the summer weather and join the Franklin County NRCD for a guided hike through the High Ponds Farm and Bear Paw Pond Conservation Areas at Hazen's Notch.

Designed for Franklin County residents, landowners, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone interested in learning more about local natural resources, this outing will explore watershed dynamics, sustainable trail design, history of the land, wildlife habitat, native and invasive species, and responsible recreation practices.

Along the trail, FCNRCD staff will discuss how water moves through the watershed, how healthy forests and soils protect water quality, and how thoughtful trail design helps reduce erosion and runoff. Participants will also learn about Leave No Trace principles and the importance of protecting critical wildlife habitats while enjoying Vermont's outdoor spaces.

This easy-to-moderate hike will follow trails through the Bear Paw Pond and High Ponds Farm Conservation Areas. The anticipated route is 3.5 miles with ~400 feet of elevation gain.

Participants should park at the Hazen's Notch Welcome Center at 1423 VT-58 in Montgomery Center (P1 on the map above).

Wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes and bring water, weather-appropriate layers, and anything else you'll need to enjoy a comfortable hike outdoors.

If thunder or lightning is expected, the event may be cancelled or postponed. A decision will be made by 10am the day prior to the event, or by the 8am on the morning of the event if conditions develop unexpectedly.

FCNRCD is committed to making our events accessible to everyone. If you require an accommodation or service to fully participate, please contact Viva Goetze at Viva@FranklinCountyNRCD.org or 802-307-2697 at least 3 days prior to the event.
